In 1978 special permission was granted by the Vatican for the tomb of the "great Roman," St. Francis of Assisi, to be opened and examined. The year 1978 also witnessed the election of Pope John Paul I. Pope John Paul was an honest pope who once suggested that the Church should melt down some of its gold altar ornaments to purchase food for the poor.
